Abstract
The ability of proverb interpretation is related to executive function, abstract thinking, and pragmatic ability. We hypothesized that proverb interpretation is impaired in amnestic mild cognitive impairments(aMCI) diagnosed as multiple domain impairment by various neuropsychological test. We examined 24 normal elderly and 36 participants with aMCI aged 65 years or more. The task included Short forms of Geriatric Depression Scale, Korean-Montreal Cognitive Assessment, proverb interpretation task, and Short forms for Korean-Boston Naming Test. The results revealed significant differences in most of executive function and proverb interpretation abilities between aMCI and normal elderly(NE) groups. Additionally, in the proverb interpretation task, 88% of the NE subjects successfully interpreted the proverbs in a meaningful way. However, only 39% of the aMCI tended to give sensible answers. Proverb interpretation ability as well as confrontation naming ability were regarded as significant predictors for executive function. These results may suggest that, in subjects diagnosed as multiple domain aMCI, appropriate and reliable proverb interpretation task could serve in detecting deterioration of executive function.
